Our Interior Designer Guide to:: Sofa & Sectional Throw Pillow Size Guide
Adding throw pillows to your sofa is such a simple way to add to your room's aesthetic and to switch up your decor seasonally. Although it seems simple, it can be a daunting task if you’re unsure of how to pair pillows together and choose sizes that will work best together. Today, we’re here to help guide you on choosing throw pillow sizes based on the size of your sofa, and we’ll also give examples of some of our favorite throw pillow pairings.
PILLOW SIZING ::
When picking out throw pillows for your sofa, the first thing to think about is the shape of your sofa. Starting with the shape of the sofa will give you an idea of the different options you have for layering the throw pillows. Below is a guide for Loveseat’s, Sofas, and Sectionals. Depending on the shape and size of your sofa, there are different ways to layer different size throw pillows. Use the images below to reference when choosing your throw pillow size combinations.
{PRO TIP: If you do not have pillow inserts, you can purchase affordably on Amazon. Here are our FAVORITES. We linked our favorite inserts on this post in various sizes. Please be sure to go 1-2 sizes up on the inserts from the pillow cover size to ensure fullness. We ALWAYS recommend down pillow inserts to give an upscale look as these have more fullness, shape and the ability to be “chopped” and “fluffed”.}
MIXING & MATCHING::
USING TEXTURES & PATTERNS:: When it comes to picking out throw pillows, you want to compliment one another, not match. Focus on coordinating colors to allow contrast, which will give you a visually appealing cascade. If you find a pillow pattern that you love, build the other layers off of that initial one. Patterns give a visual of movement.
Patterns vary in design and some are even multi-colored, some are artistic designs and others are more simplistic, like stripes or buffalo check. Choose what you feel comfortable with for your space.
Here are some helpful tips to know what to do next:
~ Once you have chosen a pattern, your next layer should not match, but coordinate. If you have horizontal stripes, I do not recommend that you choose another horizontal pattern to layer it with. Choose a solid, floral, subtle vertical pattern or geometric pattern. Main Tip: make sure to pick a pattern in one of your layers that stands out while the other layers can be more subtle.
~ Textured pillows will compliment your design. Choose linen, fur, velvet, metallics or woven fabrics.
{PRO TIP: take a picture of your pillows together to visually see for yourself whether the colors, patterns and texture all flow. A picture will show you imagery of what your vision of the space is.}
