Designing a Functional Pantry

From Cluttered to Curated: Our Pantry Transformed

One of my favorite features in our new modern farmhouse is the walk-in pantry just off the kitchen. Because it’s such a large and visible space, we knew from the beginning that we didn’t want it to simply function as storage — we wanted it to feel beautiful, intentional, and designed to be enjoyed every day. What was once cluttered and underutilized quickly became one of our favorite spaces in the home after giving it the organization and styling it deserved.

There’s something incredibly satisfying about transforming a space that once felt chaotic into something beautiful, functional, and calming. Over time, this pantry had slowly become one of the most overwhelming spaces in our home. Since moving in, it hadn’t really been cleaned or properly organized, and little by little, things just started getting thrown wherever they fit. Between living with two pre-teen girls constantly grabbing snacks, a husband who works long hours and doesn’t always have time to help keep things organized, and a dog who somehow decided the bottom shelf was the perfect place to store all of her toys, the pantry had officially gotten out of control. We could never find what we needed, shelves felt cluttered, and the entire space stopped functioning for our everyday life. I finally reached the point where I knew it was time for a complete reset.

unorganized pantry, clutter everywhere

Step One: Empty Everything

The very first step was taking absolutely everything out of the pantry and placing it across the kitchen counters.

At first, it looked a little overwhelming, but this part of the process made everything else so much easier. Instead of randomly putting things back later, we immediately started grouping similar items together so we could create systems from the beginning.

We organized:

  • Flour and sugar together

  • Pasta with pasta sauce

  • Crackers and snacks together

  • Baking items together

  • Breakfast foods in one area

This helped us see exactly what we had, how much storage we needed, and what types of containers would work best.

Cleaning + Measuring the Pantry

Once the pantry was completely empty, we cleaned every shelf and cabinet before bringing anything back in.

After that, we measured every shelf — including the height, width, and depth — so we could intentionally shop for baskets and storage containers that would actually fit the space properly.

This step made a huge difference and prevented a lot of guesswork while shopping.

Shopping for Pantry Organization

We started our shopping trip at Walmart because Better Homes & Gardens has an amazing line of pantry canisters and storage containers that come in so many useful sizes. This ended up being the majority of what we used throughout the pantry.

We also picked up BAMBOO spice racks there that worked perfectly for organizing seasonings while still keeping the pantry feeling warm and cohesive.

After Walmart, we headed to Target for additional storage and styling pieces.

Most of the items we purchased there were from the Brightroom collection, including woven baskets and stacking bins. We loved mixing the clean acrylic containers with warmer woven textures to keep the pantry from feeling too sterile.

And yes — we intentionally overbought containers and baskets. When organizing a large space, it’s so much easier to have extra options than realize halfway through the project that you don’t have enough.

Putting Everything Back Together

Once we got home, we laid out every container, basket, and bin before filling anything.

At first, the process felt overwhelming seeing everything spread out across the kitchen, but once we started, it slowly began coming together piece by piece.

We focused heavily on making the pantry functional for everyday use:

  • Frequently used items stayed on the most reachable shelves

  • Appliances and refill items were stored higher up

  • Similar items stayed grouped together

  • Each side of the pantry was kept visually balanced and symmetrical

That symmetry made such a difference in helping the space feel calmer and more intentional.

Where Function Meets Design

Once everything was organized, we added the finishing touches that made the pantry feel styled rather than simply organized.

We also added minimalist labels from Amazon to all of the containers, which instantly made the pantry feel more cohesive, elevated, and easy to maintain day to day.

Underneath the window, we layered a few books, a small plant, decorative baskets, and an accent rug from Target to soften the space and make it feel more connected to the rest of the home.

On the opposite side of the pantry is the butler’s sink area, where we added framed artwork and a small lamp from Target to bring warmth and personality into the space.

These details may seem small, but they completely changed the feel of the pantry and helped it become a space that feels both functional and beautiful.

What was once cluttered and overwhelming now feels organized, intentional, and easy to maintain — proof that a well-designed pantry can truly change the way your home functions day to day.
