5 Interior Designer Tips to Easily Bring Fall Into Your Home
Fall is one of my favorite times of year to refresh a home. But bringing the season into your space doesn’t mean covering every surface in pumpkins or completely changing your decor.
Instead, I like to think about small, intentional changes that add warmth, texture, and a little seasonal personality while still feeling like your home.
Here are five simple ways to bring fall into your home this year.
1. Swap in Warmer Textures
One of the easiest ways to make your home feel ready for fall is to focus on texture.
As the seasons change, I love introducing materials that feel a little more substantial and tactile—think chunky knits, woven baskets, linen, boucle, wool, wood, and textured pillows.
You don't need to replace everything you own. In fact, you shouldn't.
Try swapping a couple of lightweight throw pillows for something with more texture, draping a cozy throw over the back of your sofa, or adding a woven basket to an empty corner.
These small changes add visual warmth and make a room feel more layered without making it feel overly decorated.
Designer tip: When you're layering textures, don't be afraid to mix materials. A combination of linen, wood, woven fibers, and soft textiles will feel much more collected than a room filled with matching pieces.
2. Warm Up Your Color Palette
You don't have to decorate your home in orange and black to make it feel like fall.
Instead, take a look at the colors you already have and introduce a few richer, warmer tones.
Olive green, camel, rust, warm brown, muted burgundy, deep green, and creamy neutrals are all beautiful ways to bring in that fall feeling while keeping your home timeless.
The key is to use these colors as accents rather than completely changing your palette.
A rust-colored pillow, a warm-toned piece of art, a brown ceramic vase, or even a stack of coffee table books can be enough to shift the feeling of a room.
Designer tip: Choose one or two colors you love and repeat them throughout your home. Repetition makes seasonal changes feel intentional and cohesive instead of scattered.
3. Bring the Outdoors In
Fall naturally gives us so many beautiful elements to work with, so take advantage of them!
Branches, dried florals, wheat, eucalyptus, pinecones, and seasonal greenery can all add an organic touch to your home.
And don't feel like everything has to be specifically labeled “fall.”
A beautiful vase filled with branches can feel just as seasonal as a pumpkin arrangement—and you'll probably want to keep it around much longer.
Try adding a large arrangement to your kitchen island, a smaller vase to your entryway, or a simple arrangement of seasonal stems to a console or dining table.
I especially love using natural, slightly imperfect materials because they bring dimension to a space and keep it from feeling too styled.
Designer tip: When styling with branches or stems, don't make the arrangement too perfect. A little movement and asymmetry will make it feel more natural and effortless.
4. Don’t Forget About Lighting
As the days get shorter, lighting becomes one of the easiest ways to change the atmosphere of your home.
If you typically rely on overhead lighting, try turning it off in the evening and layering in smaller sources of light instead.
A table lamp on a console, a floor lamp next to the sofa, a pair of lamps on your nightstands, or a few candles on the dining table can completely change the mood of a room.
For living spaces, I recommend using warm light bulbs around 2700K. The warmer light creates a softer, more inviting atmosphere and works beautifully with the richer colors and textures we naturally gravitate toward in the fall.
Designer tip: Think about lighting your room from different heights. A combination of overhead, eye-level, and low lighting will create much more depth than one bright ceiling fixture.
5. Focus on the Spaces You Actually Use
Here's my biggest tip: you don't need to decorate your entire house for fall.
Instead, think about the spaces where your family actually spends time.
Your entryway. Your kitchen. The living room. The dining table.
These are the areas where a few small changes will make the biggest impact.
Add a seasonal arrangement to your kitchen island. Swap a few pillows on the sofa. Style a tray on your coffee table. Add a candle or a simple centerpiece to your dining table.
You don't need something in every corner.
In fact, leaving some areas untouched will help the seasonal pieces you do add feel more intentional.
Designer tip: Pick two or three areas to refresh and carry similar colors and textures throughout them. Your home will feel cohesive without looking overly “decorated for fall.”
Keep It Simple
You don't need a completely new home every time the seasons change. The best seasonal updates are often the simplest ones—a new texture, a warmer color, a beautiful branch, softer lighting, or a few thoughtfully styled pieces.
Look around your home and ask yourself: What can I swap? What can I layer? What can I simplify?
A few intentional changes can make your home feel warmer and more welcoming for the season while still feeling completely like you. And if you're ready to make bigger changes to your home but aren't sure where to start, that's where I come in.
