Today, we're excited to share tips for creating a cozy transitional living room! We get asked about Modern Transitional styling all the time. It is inviting, timeless and full of interest. Styling a living room can seem like a daunting task, but we have a few simple design rules that make it much easier than it seemsβ¦your cozy space will look professionally styled in NO time!
When beginning to style your living room, keep in mind a few of our best tips such as mixing modern & vintage pieces throughout your space and using objects with character and texture (ex. wood benches and found objects). We also prefer to stick to neutral color tones while adding muted pops of neutral color with pillows and throw blankets to keep the room warm and full of texture and dimension.
Below, we have linked some of our favorite decor items that we like to have on hand when decorating a cozy transitional space. These are all some of our favorite items to use to achieve the Modern Classic look :: books, vases and bowls, artwork, baskets, furniture with clean lines, a neutral rug, wood toned coffee and end tables and decor objects. When selecting these items, itβs important to take measurements of your space to ensure you select items that will fit well in your room. Taking measurements into account will also help you choose items to scale. Consider the items that already exist in your space and if these lend themselves to the style you are trying to create. If they do- keep them and work them in. If they donβt, consider selling and replacing these items so that the space is cohesive with your new transitional theme after you finish designing it.

Tip 1: Texture and Character
Keep your room bright and warm with natural textures and subtle contrasting tones. Use objects with character throughout your space like wooden benches.
Tip 2: Neutrals with a pop of color
Start your design with a simple neutral area rug. Decorate in Neutrals with pops of muted colors throughout (ex. browns, muted greens, golds, etc).
Tip 3: neutral furniture with clean lines
Choose neutral colored furniture with clean lines.we love mixing light and dark tones. Consider a pop of color or introducing a new element like wood or leather in accent furniture such as accent chairs. Accent furniture is a great place to pull in pieces with character and interest!
Tip 4: Comfort, Interest, Dimension and texture
Pair solid sofas with neutral toned patterned pillows for comfort and interest. Layer in throw blankets for dimension and texture. Donβd be afraid to take risks in your pillows- this is another great place to bring in cohesive interest and add warmth!
Tip 5: mix main textiles
Mixup your main textiles in the space. If you are going with a white sofa, consider cohesive but contrasting accent chairs such as velvet, leather or even a patterned textile.
Tip 6: mix vintage and modern decor
Mix vintage and layer in touches of modern decor throughout your space. Be sure you are mixing the old with the new. Adding modern pops in unexpected ways is one of our favorite things to do at Porche & Co. Ex. a modern ceiling fixture, floor lamp, piece of decor on top of books, etc. There are some great found vintage objects on ETSY. You can also have fun shopping for these at your local flea markets and thrift stores!
