How to Layer Rugs in Your Home

Porche & Co. Tips & Tricks :: HOW TO LAYER YOUR RUGS LIKE A PRO

RUGS ARE ONE OF OUR FAVORITE WAYS TO ADD WARMTH AND INTEREST INTO A ROOM. rugs are a simple yet classic way to elevate your space and make it feel complete. we also love layering rugs! layering rugs can add so much texture, dimension, and interest to a space! Layering rugs is a topic we get asked about quite frequently. what size rugs should i choose when layering? would layered rugs look good in my space? how should i choose both rugs? when layering rugs within your space, there are a few key topics to keep in mind: 1) the size of the space 2) the layout of the room 3) pattern and color COORDINATION. it can be a difficult task to get just right — but we are here to provide you with some helpful and simple tips to keep in mind when doing so! We can help you select the perfect rugs to layer in any space!

HOW TO LAYER RUGS :: Tip ONE

OUR FIRST TIP WHEN LAYERING RUGS IS TO CONSIDER THE overall SIZE OF THE room. LAYERING RUGS WORKS BETTER IN LARGER SPACES LIKE A LIVING ROOM OR BEDROOM. you want to have enough space for both rugs without things getting overcrowded. It’s important to ensure the bottom rug is large enough to allow for a significant border around the smaller rug so that you achieve an intentional look. typically, the layered rug is around ⅔ of the size of the rug beneath it or larger (see the graphic above and photos below for a visual). Typical sizes for layered rugs are 8x10, 6x9, 5x8.

YOU WANT TO BE SURE THAT THE RUGS ARE LARGE ENOUGH TO ACCOMMODATE THE SPACE BECAUSE A RUG THAT IS TOO SMALL CAN MAKE THE SPACE SEEM CRAMPED AND FEEL UNDERWHELMING, AND THE SAME THING GOES FOR AN AREA RUG THAT IS TOO LARGE. THIS IS WHY IT’S SO IMPORTANT TO TAKE MEASUREMENTS. it can also be helpful to USE PAINTER’S TAPE TO MOCK THE RUG PLACEMENT TO HELP YOU BETTER VISUALIZE THE RUG IN YOUR ROOM.

HOW TO LAYER RUGS :: Tip two

the next tip for layering rugs is to choose complementing tones. this may seem like an obvious tip, but when selecting the rugs for your space, it’s important to choose two rugs that will complement one another. We prefer to use a patterned rug layered atop a neutral rug (often a natural woven base rug). For example, we would not layer a patterned vintage rug on top of a striped rug. We tend to opt for a simple rug on the bottom and then play with patterns on the top. this lends a lot of dimension and beauty to the space without overwhelming the eyes with too much pattern and interest.

often times, we layer rugs in places like living rooms and bedrooms which are high traffic areas within your home. BECAUSE of this, you’ll want to select rugs THAT WILL LEND DURABILITY TO THE HIGH TRAFFIC AREA.
