How to Create a Magazine Worthy Bed :: Porche & Co. tips & tricks

Today’s How to Blog Post has been highly requested by numerous followers and clients! We are so excited to finally share all of our tips and tricks for making a bed that looks luxurious and beautiful, while remaining comfortable and useable! I think we can all agree that seeing a beautiful bedroom in a magazine with the bed perfectly made makes us wish we could have that in our own home…but a lot of people aren’t quite sure how to get there. Sure most store displays and magazines double stuff their duvets for maximum fluffiness, but we will teach your our tips and tricks to get a similar magazine type look. There are a few simple touches that truly make the biggest difference when achieving a well put together and inviting bed. Below we will share our favorite tips, linens, and pillows along with guides for you to refer to that will help you achieve a magazine worthy made bed!

Tip 1: Pillows

Cascade / layer with different size pillows. We made it easy for you to visualize by giving you lots of examples here. With King size beds, you have the ability to do more than smaller sized beds. Place standard pillow (or the pillow you sleep on) against the headboard first. Chose pillows that compliment the surroundings in the bedroom. Use various textures and patterns while ensuring to layer in a few solids or simpler patterns as well so you do not overwhelm the bed.

Then, start your cascade:

King / Queen beds: do a 3- or 2-layer cascade in front of bed pillows. Start with 3, 26x26 Euro sized pillows. Next, layer in 2 standard queen or king shams at 20x30 or 20x36 in size respectively. Then complete the cascade with a large lumbar pillow or multiple smaller 18x18 accent pillows. (see diagram below for depiction of various options)

Full beds: do a 3 or 2-layer cascade in front of bed pillow. Start with (2) 24x24 pillows. Next, complete the cascade with a lumbar pillow, 32x14 size recommended. A standard sham can be placed between the 24x24 pillows and lumbar pillow if desired for a fuller look.

Twin bed: do a 2-layer cascade in front of bed pillow. Start with 2, 22x22 pillows You can start with a standard sham in the back, but if you go this route size down on the next layer of pillows to 16x16.. Finally, complete the cascade with a small lumbar pillow 20x12 or smaller recommended.

TIP: If you do not have pillow inserts, you can purchase affordably on Amazon. Here are our FAVORITES. We linked our favorite inserts on this post in various sizes. Please be sure to go 1-2 sizes up on the inserts from the pillow cover size to ensure fullness. We ALWAYS recommend down pillow inserts to give an upscale look as these have more fullness, shape and the ability to be “chopped” and “fluffed”

Tip 2: Linens

Linens are also very important when creating a magazine worthy and COMFORTABLE bed. We prefer a neutral color linen such as white or oatmeal color. If you’re crazing some color, you can easily add in pops of color in your throw pillows and throw on the end of the bed. Below, we linked some of our favorite linens for softness, comfort and aestetics. We love the quality and softness of these!

Tip 3: Duvet covers

Similar to the linens, here at Porche & Co, we usually lean towards a neutral duvet cover- think white, light gray or linen. Save the patterns and colors for the throw pillows or end of bed blanket. Using a crisp bright neutral colored duvet cover will create a nice grounding brightness on the bed and a crisp clean focal point which is important in a bedroom.

Tip 4: Throw blankets or Quilts

At the end of the bed, we always like to layer a throw blanket or a quilt to add dimension and plushness! If you are craving color, this is where you can add a pop of color that ties in with the room and the throw pillows that you have chosen. Natural throws full of texture work great too!

Here are the various sizes for throws that we recommend based on your the size of your bed along with our very favorite throws that we put in our client’s homes::
