Where Indoors Meets Out: Thoughtfully Designed Outdoor Living Spaces
Where Indoors Meets Out: Thoughtfully Designed Outdoor Living Spaces
Your outdoor spaces should feel just as intentional as the rooms inside your home. Whether it’s a back deck, a covered patio, or a small seating area, these spaces have the potential to become some of the most lived-in and loved areas of your home—if they’re designed well.
The key is creating spaces that feel like a natural extension of your interior: cohesive, functional, and inviting without feeling overdone. In this post, we’re exploring several thoughtfully designed outdoor spaces—including a few favorite client-inspired looks, along with a peek into Emily’s own back porch—and breaking down what makes each one work, from layout and lighting to materials, furniture, and the small details that pull everything together.
A Covered Patio Designed for Gathering
This covered patio was designed to feel like a true extension of the home—equal parts comfortable, functional, and elevated. Instead of treating the space as purely outdoor, every element was chosen to mirror the warmth and intention you’d expect inside.
At the center, a built-in fireplace anchors the entire layout, creating a natural focal point that works year-round. Flanked by lantern sconces and layered with soft, neutral seating, the space feels both structured and inviting. The wood tones in the furniture add warmth against the lighter stone and upholstery, keeping everything from feeling too flat or overly styled.
One of the biggest design decisions here was creating two distinct zones that still feel cohesive. The lounge area is centered around conversation and comfort, while the dining space sits just in front—close enough to feel connected, but with enough separation to function independently. This kind of layout is what makes an outdoor space actually usable, not just beautiful.
Lighting also plays a huge role. The Westerly Outdoor Chandelier by Pure Salt brings in texture and softness overhead, while the sconces and candlelight add a warm glow in the evenings. It’s layered, intentional lighting that makes the space feel just as inviting at night as it does during the day.
To keep everything cohesive, we leaned into a neutral palette with subtle variation—soft patterned pillows from Pottery Barn, warm wood finishes, and natural fibers throughout. Mixing in pieces from Pottery Barn and CB2 helps strike that balance between classic and modern, giving the space a timeless feel without leaning too traditional.
Design Highlights:
Westerly Outdoor Chandelier by Pure Salt
Neutral outdoor pillows from Pottery Barn
Teak-style lounge seating with light cushions
Round pedestal dining table for a softer, more conversational layout
Woven placemats and layered table settings
Outdoor lanterns and candlelight for added warmth
A mix of natural textures like wood, stone, and woven elements
A Warm, Layered Deck Made for Evenings Outside
This deck leans into a more relaxed, lived-in feel—designed for slow evenings, casual dinners, and gathering around the fire. It’s a great example of how an outdoor space doesn’t need to be overly styled to feel elevated—it just needs the right layers.
The layout is simple but intentional. A dining table anchors the foreground, while a cozy lounge area with a sectional and fire pit creates a second zone for unwinding. Keeping these spaces connected—but visually distinct—makes the deck feel larger and more functional without overcomplicating the design.
One of the standout elements here is the lighting. String lights overhead instantly soften the space and bring in that warm, ambient glow that makes everything feel more inviting. Paired with the flicker of the fire pit, the entire space shifts effortlessly from day to night.
Material choice plays a big role in the overall feel. The warmth of the wood decking, woven textures, and soft neutral cushions create a layered look that feels approachable and comfortable. The stone fire pit table from Pottery Barn grounds the seating area and adds just enough contrast to keep the palette from feeling one-note.
We also love how the styling stays simple but thoughtful. The table is set in a way that feels elevated but not fussy—mixing in McGee & Co. pieces and place settings that add character without overwhelming the space.
This is the kind of outdoor setup that invites people to stay a little longer—easy, warm, and designed to be used.
Design Highlights:

McGee & Co. place settings
String lights for soft, ambient lighting
Layered natural textures (woven rug, wood decking, wicker seating)
Simple, elevated table styling for everyday hosting
Defined dining + lounge zones for better flow
A Covered Outdoor Kitchen & Lounge That Feels Fully Finished
This space takes outdoor living a step further, blending a full kitchen, dining area, and lounge into one cohesive, fully realized design. It feels less like a patio—and more like an extension of the home you could live in year-round.
The outdoor kitchen immediately sets the tone. With stonework, open shelving, and warm wood tones carried through the ceiling, it creates a grounded, architectural backdrop that elevates everything around it. It’s functional, but also intentionally designed to feel styled and complete.
Just off the kitchen, the dining area is kept simple but refined. The mix of natural textures and clean lines allows the materials to speak for themselves, while the Malta dining chairs from Serena & Lily soften the space with their woven detail and light finish. Overhead, the iron chandelier from Pottery Barn adds contrast and structure—and being on sale makes it an easy statement piece to incorporate.
The lounge area mirrors that same balance. Symmetrical seating creates a more formal, pulled-together feel, while the fireplace keeps it warm and inviting. At the center, the concrete coffee table from CB2 grounds the space and adds a subtle modern edge that keeps everything from leaning too traditional.
What makes this space work so well is the consistency. Every element—from finishes to furniture to lighting—feels considered and connected. It’s a great example of how layering materials and repeating tones can make an outdoor space feel fully designed, not pieced together.
Design Highlights:

Malta dining chairs from Serena & Lily
Built-in outdoor kitchen with stone + wood detailing
Open shelving for styling and function
Symmetrical lounge layout for a more elevated feel
Emily’s Own Outdoor Space
When designing outdoor spaces for clients, we always come back to the same philosophy we use in our own homes: prioritize comfort, durability, and pieces that feel elevated without being untouchable.
Emily’s covered back porch is one of the best examples of that balance. The space blends dining, cooking, and lounging into one cohesive layout that feels relaxed enough for everyday life, but still thoughtfully designed. Warm wood tones on the ceiling and vent hood add contrast against the lighter flooring and walls, while layered textures throughout keep the space feeling soft and inviting.
One of our favorite design decisions in this space is the dining area. The woven dining chairs from Wayfair give the look of a much higher-end designer piece while still being incredibly affordable—a reminder that good design doesn’t always have to mean luxury price tags. Paired with simple outdoor place settings from Walmart, the table feels approachable, practical, and easy to recreate.
The lounge area was designed with comfort in mind. The Outer sofa set completely transformed the space—not only because of the quality, but because the performance fabric and relaxed silhouette make the area feel livable year-round. Just beyond the seating area, the Birch Lane fire pit helps anchor the porch and creates a natural gathering spot for evenings outside.
What makes this space feel successful isn’t any one statement piece—it’s the layering of materials, the balance between high and low, and the focus on creating a space that’s meant to actually be lived in.
Design Highlights:
Warm wood ceiling and vent hood detailing
Layered neutral textures throughout
A functional layout for dining, lounging, and entertaining
