Porche & Co. Coffee Table Styling Tips
If your coffee table is looking a little... underwhelming, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most-used surfaces in your home and also one of the trickiest to style.
At Porche & Co., we believe beautiful design should be livable. Whether you're styling a fresh new space or refreshing what you already have, these tips will help you layer, balance, and curate a look that feels elevated and effortless.
Not Sure Where to Start? Choose the Right Coffee Table First.
Before you style it, make sure the coffee table itself fits your space. Here’s what to keep in mind:
Size matters: Aim for about two-thirds the length of your sofa and keep 14–18" of space around it for easy flow.
Shape follows layout: Rectangular for traditional sofas, round or oval for tight spaces or sectionals.
Mix materials: If your room already has lots of wood, consider stone, metal, or woven textures for balance.
Style vs. storage: Need a spot for remotes and kid toys? Go for hidden storage. Want a lighter look? Choose an open base or simple silhouette.
Why Coffee Table Styling Matters
Your coffee table sits at the heart of your living room. It’s often the first thing guests notice—and the piece your family uses most. When styled thoughtfully, it can anchor the room, reflect your personality, and tie together your design aesthetic.
Our Go-To Tips for Styling a Coffee Table
1. Start with a Base
Books are a stylist's best friend. Stack two to three hardcover books to ground your look and add a touch of sophistication. Look for books that complement your color palette or feature topics that feel personal—interiors, travel, photography, etc.
Pro tip: We often use titles like“Made for Living,” “Still,” and “Live Beautiful” to set the tone.
2. Layer in Height and Texture
The secret to designer styling? Layering. Mix tall and short items, hard and soft materials. A stone bowl, a textural bead strand, or a ceramic vase with dried florals can make all the difference.
In the image BELOW, note how the trailing plant softens the structured elements, while the rustic wood riser adds dimension.
3. Group in Odd Numbers
Styling works best in threes. Create small clusters using different shapes and materials—like a candle, decorative object, and a bowl—to keep things visually interesting without cluttering the surface.
We love mixing a sculptural piece (like iron horses or ceramic homes) with a warm candle for a curated yet cozy vibe.
4. Use Natural Elements
Bring life to your coffee table with a plant, dried stems, or a bowl of natural beads. It helps balance the “decor” with something grounded and organic.
If you don’t have a green thumb, dried florals and faux stems are beautiful and maintenance-free.
5. RefleCT YOU
The best coffee table styling feels personal. Include a meaningful piece: a souvenir from travel, a vintage find, something handmade, or a picture frame. These are the items that spark conversation and make your space truly yours.
