Tips for Small Condo, Apartment, or RV Living

10 Do’s and Don’ts for Small Living Spaces::

  1. Do be intentional with furniture: Because you’re in a smaller space, you unfortunately don’t have the luxury of extra pieces to be used occasionally. So, when selecting furniture, you want to be sure you are only getting pieces you know you need and will use.  Pottery Barn’s PB/Apartment collection has amazing pieces for apartments and other small living spaces to choose from! Shop some of our favorite pieces from this line below::

2. Don’t use dark colors or thick fabrics: Dark and thick fabrics can bring a lot of weight and darkness into a room, making an already small space feel even smaller. Instead, choose light color upholstery and light fabrics for your furniture to open up the space and make it brighter! Emily opted for bright and airy bedding throughout the small space of the RV::

3. Do add trim work: Adding trim work to your walls add dimension and depth which tricks the eye into making a room appear larger!

4. Don’t use dark wall paint or wallpaper: Instead go for lighter neutral tones, and vertical patterned wallpaper to add brightness and depth to your space!

5. Do use vertical shiplap: Shiplap is a classic design feature that never goes out of style! Vertical shiplap adds the illusion of height in a room making the walls seem taller and providing interest!

6. Don’t avoid natural light: Although natural light may keep rooms warmer, it brings in so much brightness and openness to any space! Adding curtains in light neutral tones and fabrics like linen will allow the beams of light to peer through, illuminating the space. If natural light is limited, definitely consider bringing in standing or table lamps to create the same effect!

7. Do use mirrors: Mirrors are a great and affordable way to add depth and dimension into a room. Additionally, they allow light to reflect off of them and back into the room adding to the effect of greater dimension!

8. Don’t over accessorize: Although design details are important and provide focal points, they can quickly make a space go from put together to cluttered in a small room. As with the first tip, be intentional and highly selective about the design details you choose to bring into your space!

9. Do use printed rugs: Geometric shapes or floral prints are great for rugs in neutral tones or even for a pop of color. This will help create more of a focal point and interest in your space! Shop some of our favorites below::

10. Don’t use oversized bookshelves: Saving floor space will allow the rooms to feel larger and longer. If storage space is limited, consider adding wall mounted shelves or cabinets in place of furniture that sits on the floor!
