Tips for Transitioning to a Big Kid’s Bedroom

With the start of the new school year, it’s impossible to ignore the fact that our children are growing up, becoming more independent, and wanting to express themselves more. I, like a lot of parents, am currently dealing with my eldest wanting to redecorate her room into her big girl’s bedroom. Although the task can seem overwhelming, and can lead to clashes of opinions between what your child wants and what you want, we’ve put together our best tips and tricks to make the transition as easy and enjoyable as possible!

Our first tip is to purchase timeless furniture that will take your child through adulthood. As furniture is more expensive, we recommend purchasing classic timeless pieces that will get years of use, and will serve your child’s needs as they continue to grow. For older children, we recommend adding a desk and chair to create a study area where they can feel more independent and peaceful to avoid the commotion of a busy household in common rooms, such as your living room or kitchen. Next, in terms of bedding, try selecting duvets, sheets, and shames in neutral tones and higher quality materials that can grow with your child and last years. To give your child an opportunity to participate in the process, and allow them to express their individual style and personality, we recommend allowing them to select their own throw blankets and pillows. These accent pieces will bring more interest and dimension to the room, and can be easily and inexpensively swapped out as your child grows and their style changes. To further bring in pops of color and your child’s individuality into the space, we love adding accent walls in their favorite color, or having them pick out their own removable wall paper in a print they love. Having this accent wall brings in a focal point to the space as well as adding more depth and personalization. Some of our favorite wallpapers to use to create accent walls:

As rugs can be more expensive and are more of an investment piece, we recommend selecting one yourself, but a fun idea is to use a cheaper rug, such as from Ruggable, to layer on top to add more visual interest. By layering a machine washable rug over the more expensive piece you can protect it from the general wear and tear and messes kids can cause. In addition to being machine washable, Ruggable rugs also come in endless fun kid friendly colors and designs.
Lastly, to bring more personality and unique touches to your child’s bedroom, we absolutely love decorating with personalized art pieces and photographs your child picks out to create a gallery wall for a more stylized look! Our favorite frames to use to create gallery walls:
