How to Hang Window Treatments :: Porche & Co. Tips & Tricks

Our design clients at Porche & Co. often ask for tips on how to hang window treatments and the best way to do so — today we are going to give you all of our best tips and tricks! Knowing how to hang your window treatments can significantly change the look and feel of your space and rooms!

Measure: You’ll want to begin by measuring the length and height of your window to ensure that you are using the correct size curtain rod for your space!

Tip: One thing to keep in mind is that you will definitely be needing a curtain rod that is longer in length than your window… think of this formula: the length of your window + at least 20-24”!

Hang Curtain Rod: Once you have the correct length curtain rod, the next step is to figure out where to hang it! A good rule of thumb to go by is hanging the curtain rod at least 6" above the window frame. Depending on your space and the height of your walls, you could even take the curtain rod all the way up to the ceiling. This will make your space appear bigger and your ceilings taller! The curtain rod will also need to extend about 10-12” on each side of the window. Hanging your curtains slightly outside of the window frame will help make your windows appear larger!

Picking the Right Curtains: Before buying curtains, you will want to measure from where your curtain rod is placed all the way down to the floor. A common mistake when picking out curtains is purchasing before you measure, and ending up with ones that are too short or too long! For the most polished look, curtains should just lightly touch the floor once hung.

Hanging Your Curtains: Once you have the right length curtains, you are ready to hang them! When open, curtains shouldn’t fall more than 2” inside the frame to allow for maximum light to shine through. This will help make your space appear brighter and bigger! It will also make your windows appear larger, as well.

Tip: If you are likely to open and close your curtains often, think about using curtain rings or clips for easier movement!

Adding a Shade: Instead of plastic blinds, try opting for a woven or linen shade layered behind your curtains! We love the added texture and dimension it brings to windows and they are a great way to still have privacy, as well! Shades are also fully customizable to your window and space, including adding blackout or privacy liners, etc.
