Porche & Co. Tips & Tricks:: What Size Rug Should I Choose for my Space?
AREA RUG GUIDE :: ‘PORCHE PICKS’
Rugs are one of our favorite ways to add warmth, dimension and interest while really defining a space within a room. They help to transform a space and make it feel cohesive, but shopping for them and knowing exactly what size will work best for your space isn’t always easy. Today, we are sharing a guide to help you choose the perfect size rug for your space, and we will also be sharing some of our favorite rugs!
LIVING ROOM
When shopping for a rug, the first thing to consider is the size, shape and layout of the room. You want to be sure that the rug is large enough to accommodate the space because a rug that is too small can make the space seem cramped and feel underwhelming, and the same thing goes for an area rug that is too large. This is why it’s so important to take measurements of your space and the items within it.
Depending on how you want to arrange your furniture, there are different layout options for you can choose for a rug. The three main ways to setup furniture surrounding a rug are as follows: only the front legs of the furnishings on the rug, all furniture legs on the rug, or all furniture off the rug besides the coffee table (use the visual we created below for reference). If you’d prefer all furniture off the rug (besides the coffee table), ensure that the rug is at least as wide as your sofa (ideally a foot or two wider).
Once you’ve decided on a layout and size of the rug you want, we suggest using painter’s tape to mock the rug placement within your space. This will help you better visualize the rug in your room before ordering.
BEDROOM
You will use a very similar process when choosing a rug for your bedroom. Be sure to consider the shape of the room, take into account where doors are located in the space, and note any other furniture in the room (ottomans, benches at the end of the bed, etc.). If you do have a bench or ottomans at the end of your bed, you’ll want to ensure that your rug will be large enough for the items to sit fully on and have at least 12 inches of rug beyond it.
Be sure to take measurements! We recommend choosing a rug that extends at least 12 to 24 inches on each edge of the bed. Pro Tip:: It is common now to place one of the long sides of the rug about 1’-2’ in front of the nightstand and have it extend a good bit past the edge of the bed no matter the size of the bed, rug, or nightstands.
You can also use painter’s tape or a bed sheet to help you visualize the rug size within your bedroom.
After you’ve decided on the perfect rug size for your space, then it’s time to choose the rug itself! Often times, the living room is a popular space in the home, so it’s important to choose a rug that will lend durability to the high traffic area. We have picked out some of our favorite, durable rugs to share with you below.
