Holiday Decorating Made Easy: Simple Designer Tips for a Warm & Welcoming Home
Thereβs nothing like walking into a home during the holidays that feels warm, cozy, and full of quiet charm. Whether youβre starting from scratch or just refreshing what you already have, the key to beautiful holiday decorating is keeping it simple, intentional, and timeless. Christmas is my absolute favorite time of year, and Iβm so happy to share my tips with you!
Start with the staples: Garland & Bells
If you invest in just one or two quality holiday pieces, make it garland and bells.
I love using vintage-style bells everywhere β tucked into garland, hanging from doors, layered over mirrors, or even tied around napkins at the dinner table. They add texture, warmth, and that subtle nostalgic charm that feels like Christmas without being over the top.
For garland, I always recommend real greenery if you can get your hands on it, but there are so many beautiful faux options now that look incredibly realistic (and last year after year). I like to use garland beyond just the fireplace β over console tables, stair rails, and even draped above beds paired with bells. Itβs a simple way to bring the holiday spirit into every room.
Keep the palette neutral & timeless
I naturally gravitate toward neutral tones β warm browns, soft whites, taupes, and touches of velvet. These colors feel inviting and calm, and the best part is they transition beautifully into winter decor once the holidays are over.
Youβll see touches of velvet ribbons throughout my home β light brown or ivory bows tied on wreaths, garland, and even around the backs of counter stools. I love this simple detail that feels thoughtful without being fussy.
The Christmas tree: Make it the focal point
The tree is always the heart of the home during the holidays. Mine is styled with velvet bows and neutral ornaments β nothing too personal or themed, just cohesive and beautiful. That said, I still want it to feel fun for my kids. So, we decorate a smaller tree in their rooms where all the family ornaments live β the colorful, sentimental ones that tell our story.
For presents under the tree, I use coordinating wrapping paper and ribbon so everything feels consistent and intentional. Even our stockings match, and since theyβre not monogrammed, I hang wooden name tags from each one β the perfect finishing touch (and yes, even the dog has one!).
Add texture through materials
Instead of relying on bold holiday colors, layer in texture. Think: linen table runners, velvet bows, wooden nutcrackers, woven baskets, and ceramic houses.
I especially love the white ceramic houses for console tables or bookshelves β they glow softly at night and add such an understated festive feel.
Create cozy lighting moments
Nothing transforms a space like warm lighting. Add battery-operated candles to windows, twinkle lights in garland, or a small lit tree in unexpected spots like the hallway or bathroom.
These subtle touches make the house feel magical β especially in the evenings when the lights are low.
Incorporate scent & natural elements
Even the simplest decor feels special when you add scent. I love simmer pots with pine, clove, and orange, or a candle that smells like winter.
If you want to keep things budget-friendly, mix in natural elements like pinecones, dried oranges, or greenery from your yard. They look beautiful in bowls, trays, and vases and blend perfectly with a neutral palette.
Style everyday spaces too
I love decorating more than just the main living areas. A few wreaths on counter stools, garland draped over a bed, or a small tray of ornaments on a console table instantly make the home feel complete.
Use what you already have β a wooden bowl, vase, or tray β and just add a few seasonal touches. Itβs simple and still feels intentional.
Decorating for Christmas doesnβt have to be complicated β itβs really about layering warmth, texture, and intention. Choose pieces you love, invest in quality where it counts, and focus on creating a space that feels peaceful and personal.
Whether youβre styling your mantel, your kitchen, or your bedroom, these simple touches will make your home feel warm, inviting, and perfectly ready for the season.
