Lighting Guide :: PORCHE PICKS

Choosing lighting for your home can be a daunting task, but it’s also such a great way to make a statement and set the tone for each space within your home. Today we are sharing some of our favorite chandeliers with you, and also sharing a few tips and tricks when it comes to selecting the perfect chandelier for your home.

First things first, think about the style and aesthetic of the room. A chandelier is often the focal point of the room, so it’s important to make sure the chandelier you choose captures the atmosphere you’re going for but will also be cohesive with the furniture and theme of the room. Whether it’s coastal, modern luxe, or vintage inspired, it is great to already have your style in mind when you start your search. Here at Porche & Co., we lean towards a Modern Classic Aesthetic that truly captures a timeless design within your home while also incorporating touches of modern trends. Here are some of our favorite chandelier type fixtures::

After you’ve nailed down the style you want to achieve within the room, you need to think about the size of the chandelier for the room. A good rule of thumb for selecting the perfect width of your chandelier is to measure the length and width of the room and then add those two numbers together. The sum of those two numbers should be (roughly) the diameter of your chandelier in inches. For example, if your room measures 10 x 14, the diameter of your fixture should measure around 24 inches. Of course, this rule is not set in stone, but it’s great to keep in mind because you don’t want your lighting to feel way to small or way to big within the space, so this is a great starting place.

Vertical height of the lighting is not quite as important as diameter as there are quite a few different shapes when it comes to chandeliers, but it’s a good thing to think about before selecting your chandelier. You can use another simple rule of thumb when deciding on the perfect length of your chandelier:: measure your ceiling height in feet and then multiply that number by 2.5 and 3. This will give you a good idea of a range for vertical proportions for your light fixture. For example, if you have 9 foot ceilings, your chandelier should be roughly between 22.5 inches and 27 inches (9 feet x 2.5 =22.5 feet and 9 feet x 3 = 27 feet. Convert to inches to get 22.5 inches and 27 inches). This rule does not always apply as you should typically hang your chandelier at least 7 feet above the floor, so if you have 8 foot ceilings, at 20inch - 24inch won’t work in your space. For lower 8ft ceilings, we love flush mounts. Here are some of our favorite flush mounts::

When placing a chandelier above a dining table, we typically recommend the bottom of the chandelier hang about 30 to 34 inches above the table. Also, be sure that your chandelier will not be wider than the table. It should be about 12 inches narrower than the table. If you have a long table, you could choose a rectangular chandelier, or you could hang two smaller chandeliers above the table.
