How to Hang Island Pendants :: Porche & Co. Tips & Tricks

We’re excited to be bringing you a series of how-to’s — all surrounding how to properly hang your lighting! We get asked ALL of the time by clients on where and how to hang light fixtures in different spaces. Have you ever wondered where exactly to place the light fixture or how many fixtures you might need for a particular space?! There are several rules of thumb that you want to try to follow when hanging fixtures, as hanging them too high or too low can really make a difference in the space. We’re kicking it off with how to hang your kitchen island pendants! Do you struggle with knowing which type of pendant would work best or how many you need above your island? We’ve got you covered and will walk you through step by step and let you in on all of the designer tips! We’ve also rounded up some of our favorite island pendants to use in clients’ homes that make such a statement in a kitchen 🤍

How to Hang Island Pendants::

When picking out pendants for your kitchen island, you want to make sure you know the size of your island as this will make a difference. For a smaller island (6-7’), you might only need 2 pendants. But for larger islands (8’+), you might want 3 pendants depending on their size.

Tip 1:: When measuring your island and deciding how many pendants, you want at least 6” of space (or more!) from the edge of the island to the outermost part of the pendant light fixture.

Tip 2:: The bigger your island, the larger pendant size you will want! You want the lighting to feel to scale with the size of the island, or it could look out of place. The smaller your island, the smaller sized pendant you will want to pick.

Once you have decided how many pendants and which ones, it is time to hang them!

Tip 3:: You will want your pendants to be centered over the island. This means if you are hanging three pendants, the one in the middle will be hung directly over the center of the island. If you are only hanging two pendants, each one will be the same, equal distance from the center of the island (at least 30” from the center).

Tip 4:: The pendants should be about 30-32” from one another. This spacing may vary depending on the size of the pendants.

Tip 5:: You will want to hang the pendants so that there is about 30-36” of space between the island countertop and the bottom of the light fixture. This can vary as your ceiling height may be very tall or shorter. You will want to make sure that the pendants are hung so that your view isn’t totally obstructed from the kitchen into other spaces (if you have a taller husband, you might want to hang them a bit higher!).

Always remember, these are just rules of thumb to consider and you can tweak these as needed for your particular and personal space! You might have to adjust some of these guidelines to best fit your space and needs.
