How to Make a Space Feel Larger

One thing we get asked a lot is how to make a space feel larger, so this week we decided come up with a list of our favorite tips and tricks to help! Although you cannot physically make a space larger, there are so many options to help add a sense of openness and flow to smaller spaces.

To start, one super simple trick is to add a large mirror in the space. This helps reflect light back into the space creating an illusion of a larger room and adding depth into the space. Another tip we love is painting ceilings a lighter color than the walls. This adds height to the room, making the ceiling appear taller than it is, and helps draw the eye upwards. Our favorite mirrors:

Next, we suggest keeping the tones in the room light and neutral. This goes for furniture, pillows and blankets, as well as drapes. Darker tones make the space feel smaller and heavier. Consider bringing light fabric drapes such as linen, and keeping them open to let as much natural light in as possible. Also consider adding a lamp or two into the space to help bring in more light if natural light is limited. Our top picks for lamps:

For our last step, we suggest adding vertical trim work (shiplap or board and batten), and in a color that matches or is lighter than your walls. This will make the room appear not only larger but give the illusion of higher ceilings as well! To create more depth and a focal point, we also love adding wall paper in simple light prints and patterns with neutral light tones in order to add more visual interest to the space, as well as creating more depth and dimension!
