Porche Tips & Tricks:: How to Style a Mantel
How to Style a Mantel :: Porche & Co. Tips & Tricks
Our design clients at Porche & Co. often ask for tips on styling a mantel, so today we are going to give you all of our best tips and tricks. Knowing how to decorate your mantel can feel overwhelming because the fireplace is often a focal point of the room, so it is important to style it to create a cohesive statement in the space.
Anchor
You’ll want to begin by choosing an anchor item to be the focal point. This will be a large object like artwork, a mirror, or even a television. Once you know what you want to use as your anchor item, you can build out the mantle decor from there.
Tips: We love to use a mirror to brighten up a small space and to make it feel larger. When utilizing artwork as an anchor point, we try to use artwork with tones found throughout the space to create a really cohesive feel. We prefer to keep the artwork simple while still creating interest and a nice focal point. Another tip if you have decided on placing your television over the mantel, is to consider purchasing the Frame TV (its sleek design imitates a frame, and you can choose artwork to display on your mantel instead of a black blank screen).
2. Add Height
After you’ve centered your anchor object, choose some items of varying heights (that are smaller than your anchor item). This will help you create depth and interest. Choose items with different shapes, sizes, and colors. These can be items such as candlesticks, vases, plants, or even stacked books. At Porche & Co. we prefer to stick with simple more neutral items full of texture and dimension.
3. Layer & Fill In
Layer the selected items and objects of various heights in front of and beside your anchor piece to add visual interest and complexity. This helps add more character, but be sure not to overcrowd the mantel. Too many small items can look cluttered and do the opposite of creating a focal point.
Pro-Tip::
Don’t stress- creating the perfect, timeless fireplace mantle may take some rearranging and trying out various items. Don’t be afraid to take some risks and see how you like a setup you might not normally do. Remember, you are creating one of the main focal points in the room- it should be fun, personal and cohesive!
