Our Trip to the 2020 Southern Living Idea House
If you’ve been following along on instagram (@theporcheplace), you know that the Porche & Co. design team took a trip last week to see the 2020 Southern Living Idea House! We had such a fun mini-getaway to Asheville. We LOVE stepping outside of our daily routines to gain interior design inspiration in new ways. We love exploring the work of other designers and understanding and analyzing new trends in home design to bring our online design clients fresh creative ideas for their homes.
The Southern Living home was set in an idyllic private mountain community within Biltmore Forest called The Ramble. The property used to be owned by the Biltmore Estate, but is now a privately owned community full of gorgeous mountain views, winding roads, walking trails and numerous luxurious homes.
The Southern Living home was 3,600 sq ft of pure vintage Mountain luxury charm. The designer was Lauren Leiss. The builders were Rick Buchanan, Jason Norton, and Rodger Gardner of Buchanan Construction, architects Kate Campbell and Beau Clowney of Beau Clowney Architects, and landscape architect Greg Cloos.
Interior
The inside was full of natural wood tones mixed with white and predominantly green accents. The paint colors varied throughout each room- most were a part of the Sherwin Williams Emerald Designer Edition collection. Similar to the exterior, the interior designer drew most of her inspiration from the home’s surroundings- hence the various shades of green paint and natural woods throughout the home.
One of my favorite things about the house was the kitchen. The kitchen boasted two islands and a third back countertop surface- all with different purposes and surfaces. Two of the three were different finishes of Ceaserstone quartz countertops (fresh concrete 4001 & airy concrete 4044). These are really neat as they resemble concrete but are made of high quality quartz and are extremely durable. I absolutely loved the rustic simplistic look that the surfaces had against the various natural tones (and copper decor!) throughout the kitchen. So classic and charming- I could cook and entertain in here all day!
At the heart of the home was an amazing screened-in porch which flowed directly from the kitchen and living room. It included a wood-burning fireplace made from stone and premium decking that is scratch and stain resistant - perfect for kids and furry friends! The cherry on top was the Charleston bedswing that made for the most inviting spot to cozy up. The space would be absolutely amazing for entertaining friends or enjoying a fall night by the fire.
The 2020 Idea House was truly beautiful from top to bottom and you could see the surroundings of the outdoors pulled through in the design selections throughout the house. From quaint bedrooms with cozy and distinguished decor to a dramatic yet unbelievably inviting library, each room provided the perfect place for relaxation and entertainment all at once. We were so inspired by the design choices throughout!
Exterior
The exterior of the Southern Living home was just as beautiful and inspiring as the interior. As you walk up to the home in beautiful Asheville NC you immediately feel relaxed and although it is a house surrounded by lush greenery you get a feeling of tranquility and airiness...not your typical cabin in the woods. The designer decided on a custom paint blend on the exterior. The result of altering the pigment left the house feeling warm and not stark white. Exterior Paint: The Sherwin-Williams Company- Emerald Exterior Rain Refresh- SW 7006 Extra White (*Custom Tint- Quill DCR102- 10% for Siding, Corner Boards and Rafters; 20% for Shutters). Front Entry Door in Emerald Exterior Rain Refresh- SW 6418 Rural Green. The use of copper lighting throughout the exterior gives you a feeling that the home has always been here. The backyard has the perfect fire pit and custom dog house that is a mini version of the home! I could picture many cool nights out by the fire enjoying nature. The deck features outdoor furniture using Sunbrella fabric so it holds up to the elements.
The Southern Living 2020 Idea House was absolutely beautiful, and the Porche & Co design team left feeling inspired and excited to continue helping our clients breathe new life into their homes through e-design.
XOXO,
Emily, Elizabeth & Mallory (Porche & Co. Design Team)
